Garage Slab with Curb Measurements

Dimensions are important, the slab must be square and the dimensions should be accurate. Give this page to your concrete contractor. We recommend raised curbs however flat slabs will work. Top of slab or curb must be at least 6 inches above finished grade.

Dimensions A and B diagonal outside corner to outside corner.
Dimensions should be equal (Means floor is square)

Dimensions C, D, E and F. Width and Length outside curb to outside curb.
Outside dimensions should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch under. Opposite sides should equal. (example: 24 ft. wide garage, slab should be 23 ft 11 3/4 in.)

Dimension G is the overhead door opening in the curb.
Opening should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch over. (example: 16 ft OHD should be 16 ft 1/4 inch opening.)

Dimension H is the distance from the corner to the edge of OHD opening.

Dimension I is the service door opening.
Opening should be 1/4 inch over. (example: 32 inch SD (34 inch rough opening) should be 34 1/4 inch opening.)

Dimension J is the distance from the corner to the edge of SD opening.

Dimension K is the curb height of OHD.

Dimension L is the curb height of SD.

  • Floors should slope 2 inches toward the OHD. Curb height should be 5 1/2 inches at the OHD and 3 1/2 inches at the opposite side.
  • Curb width should be 3 1/2 to 5 inches. If local code requires wider curb, curb must be notched 3 inches at OHD opening for track clearance.
  • Float slab: 4000 MIX (3500 min.), 4 inch floor, wire mesh, 12 inch x 12 inch footings with two 1/2 inch rebar. check local code.
  • Frost footings check local code.
  • DO NOT pour concrete on top of sod. Remove all sod and fill with compacted rock or sand to desired grade. Usually bottom of slab is level with top of highest point of grade. Build-up is often required on uneven grades. (DO NOT use loose fill under floor. Fill must be compacted, use small crushed rock or sand).
  • Top of curbs edged and level.
  • Overhead door opening: sloped 1/4" to outside, level across opening to 3" behind curb at each end of opening.
